description
This rosso antico Egyptian teapot by Wedgwood presents a stunning hierogylphic-inspired design, incorporating plants, vultures, griffins and even crocodiles. The symbols’ dramatic black hue contrasts beautifully with the teapot's warm baked earth tone. The unglazed, dry-body red stoneware known as rosso antico was first developed by Wedgwood between 1765 and 1770, and was usually made into tea sets, vases, plates, and jugs. The firm began to explore Egyptian themes around this same period, and the motifs became particularly popular following Napoléon's Egyptian campaign (1798-1801). This teapot is a charming marriage of these two popular styles, reflecting Wedgwood at its creative best.
